When we remove your braces, we will begin the retention phase of your treatment. We will give you custom-fit retainers and tell you how long to wear them and when. For example, you might have to wear them all day for a month but then only at night after that. The retainers keep the teeth in line and you won’t even notice them while you are sleeping.
Our office uses three kinds of retainers. The two most common are the Essix retainers, which are clear and almost invisible, and the wire and hard plastic (Hawley) retainers. Occasionally, Dr. Wass will place a non-removable cemented retainer on the lower teeth.
Your final orthodontic result depends on faithful wearing of your retainers as instructed, so follow through with the hard work you’ve put in so far! We offer to monitor our patients closely but, ultimately, it is your responsibility to maintain good, long-lasting results.
Hawley retainers can be made in many different colors
